Mohammed Kudus: West Ham forward wanted by Tottenham can excite again after stuttering second season

Mohammed Kudus could bring excitement and spark to Spurs' attack - if he can consistently recapture the levels of his first Premier League season; Tottenham remain in talks with West Ham over Ghana international after opening £50m bid rejected, with big gap in valuation

The winger had opened the scoring earlier in the October derby but was eventually sent off late on after a VAR check for his part in a melee, which began with Kudus repeatedly booting the ball against a fallen Van de Ven. It summed up West Ham's frustrations after they had blown their advantage to go 4-1 down.

Kudus was handed a five-game ban for the incident. He later admitted he had "lost his cool" and was "deeply embarrassed" by the events. If Spurs do go on to sign him, there could be some interesting initial conversations with his former adversaries.

There will be a very different reaction from the fans who jeered him off the pitch that day, though.

Kudus is an exciting transfer target. Spurs rarely do business with West Ham - the Ghanian would be the first signing from their rivals in 14 years - but Kudus is deemed talented enough to make an exception for.

Kudus is just about to turn 25, would add much-needed depth to Spurs' wide attacking positions and, after two seasons in east London, is well aware of the demands of the Premier League. With three years still to run on his West Ham contract, it all adds up to a price tag north of £50m.

So what would Spurs be getting for their money? And how much of a concern should his drop-off from an eye-catching first season be?

Kudus was named as the Premier League's best newcomer by Sky Sports' Gary Neville in the MNF awards at the end of the 2023/24 season. A £38m purchase from Ajax looked like a bargain deal for West Ham, with Kudus scoring 14 times across all competitions, setting up nine more goals and bringing excitement to the London Stadium with his lightning, direct dribbles.

He even won the club's goal-of-the-season prize for an electric run through the Freiburg defence, which began in his own half.

But there were just five goals in all last term. As well as the one at Spurs, his only other goals came home and away against Brighton and Ipswich, with his final strike of the season arriving with just three minutes to play against relegated opposition at Portman Road.

Statistically it was a disappointing dip from the promise of that first campaign. "There's no doubt that he's a quality player," said Sky Sports Jamie Carragher said in May. "Last season (2023/24) he looked fantastic, he just hasn't looked the same player [in 2024/25]."

There are, though, the caveats around West Ham's form and also the positions Kudus was asked to play during the 2024/25 season.

The Hammers went from top-half finishers and Europa League quarter-finalists under David Moyes to struggling to 14th with Julen Lopetegui and then Graham Potter in charge for Kudus' second season in London.

Injury issues in the West Ham attack led to Kudus playing in four different positions in Potter's first three games in charge, something he told Sky Sports was "very difficult".

After racking up 1,523 minutes of gametime on his favoured right flank in his first season - cutting onto his favoured left foot to shoot at goal or supply Jarrod Bowen in central areas - that number dropped to 646 minutes last term, as Kudus plugged gaps across the frontline.

There were even stints in an unfamiliar centre-forward role, where he admitted struggling with the physicality and tactical runs required.

It appeared coaching had been done to try to get Kudus playing in more dangerous areas - his chance creation count nudged up, while his increased shot total included a higher percentage of efforts from closer to goal. But with his take-on numbers lower, the spark and excitement Kudus can bring to West Ham's attack was far more fleeting.

The question is how much of that is a natural inconsistency in his game and how much is down to playing in a West Ham side lacking fluidity in their attacking play last season? "Sometimes when the team isn't functioning as well as you'd like, individuals within the team can suffer with that," said Potter when asked about Kudus in May.

Will a Tottenham team - which finished three places below the Hammers but scored 18 more goals - provide the environment to help Kudus fire like he did in that first year in England?

The approach of new Spurs boss Thomas Frank will be significant. Bryan Mbeumo, a left-footer like Kudus, starred on the right side of Frank's attack at Brentford, scoring 20 times last season. Could Frank help Kudus to get near those levels?

Spurs' top scorer last season, Brennan Johnson, will be vying for the same position, as could Dejan Kulusevski, although he was increasingly used in-field by Ange Postecoglou. So Kudus could also be deployed on the left, where he spent much of his minutes last season at West Ham.

Uncertainty over Heung-Min Son's future, the end of Timo Werner's unsuccessful loan and the relative inexperience of Mikey Moore and Mathys Tel - who can also be used as a centre-forward - mean Spurs could do with an increased threat from that flank. Especially with the demands of Champions League football likely to require squad rotation.

Kudus, surely, can rediscover his defence-threatening thrust, his trademark when he is on top of his game, and the combination of spectacular strikes and back-post finishing, which he demonstrated on his last trip to Tottenham.

That all adds up to a worthwhile investment for Spurs, if they can find a figure which convinces West Ham to sell. They will then hope Kudus will be leaving opponents in disarray in a different way to his derby display last October when he is next back in N17.

Anthony Elanga: Newcastle agree £55m transfer fee to sign Nottingham Forest forward this summer

Anthony Elanga is poised to travel to Newcastle to undergo a medical and complete the £55m move; the Nottingham Forest winger is understood to be excited to play for a club in the Champions League

Although there are still the finer points of the deal to be sorted, it is understood the framework of it is agreed.

Newcastle launched an offer of £55m late last week and discussions since are understood to have centred on the structure of the payments.

Elanga is poised to travel to Newcastle to undergo a medical and complete the move once things are finalised.

He is understood to be excited to play for a club in the Champions League.

Sky Sports' William Bitibiri:

"Having spent time watching Anthony Elanga's pre-season preparations ahead of last season, it was clear that ambition was oozing out of him, like the sweat from his brow after being put through his paces by his personal strength and conditioning coach, Tom Joyce.

"It was in those very sessions where he prepared for his most productive season with 18 goal contributions in 43 appearances across all competitions. It's in his final ball where Elanga added a further dimension to his game

"Ambitions, while admitting they played a big part in his development, during and after life at Manchester United, were kept personal, but the desire to improve on his previous year was loud.

"In many ways, it was the breakout after the breakout for Elanga. The 23-year-old became the embodiment of Nottingham Forest's threat on the counter, punishing sides as Forest narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.

"Elanga added a new dimension to his game at the City Ground, with his creative return of 11 league assists, building on nine from the previous campaign. He'll have eyes on further developing this area as he prepares to link up with his Swedish compatriot, and key marksman, Alexander Isak, at St James' Park and a manager in Eddie Howe who has long been an admirer.

"His former club Man Utd may or may not have foreseen the impact Elanga could have, but they may rue letting the Carrington-grown talent leave in 2023. However, Elanga's decision to depart Old Trafford is unlikely to be one he regrets as he gears up for Champions League football on the Toon."

Noni Madueke transfer news: Chelsea expecting bid from Arsenal for winger

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has emerged as a top target for Arsenal; Madueke has made 45 appearances this season, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists; Madueke joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has played 91 times for the club; His contract runs until 2030.

The Gunners have looked at a number of players in the forward positions, including Real Madrid's Rodrygo. It is understood they have kept an eye on Madueke's development. There has not been any club-to-club contact yet.

Arsenal have only added goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and are looking to sign a left winger. Madueke, though, played at right wing 33 times for Chelsea during the 2024/25 season and only seven on the left.

Arsenal also have Bukayo Saka and Ethan Nwaneri to fill the right-winger spot.

Following Chelsea's 2-1 quarter-final win against Palmeiras at the Club World Cup on Saturday, head coach Enzo Maresca said that any players in his squad who are unhappy are free to leave.

Madueke came on as a second-half substitute for Christopher Nkunku in Philadelphia and stretched the Palmeiras defence.

Chelsea signed Madueke from PSV Eindhoven for £29m in January 2023 and he has five years left on his contract.

Chelsea have strengthened significantly in attack with strikers Liam Delap arriving for £30m from Ipswich Town and Joao Pedro joining from Brighton in a deal worth up to £60m.

The club also added Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of £48.5m plus £3.5m in potential add-ons.

Man United transfers: 18-year-old Diego Leon joins from Paraguay

Manchester United have signed 18-year-old Paraguayan defender Diego Leon on Saturday, describing him as "an emerging talent."

The 18-year-old joined from Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, where he played 33 senior games.

"Leon reached the age of 18 in April and as an emerging talent will be supported by our first team and the academy whilst he settles into life in Manchester," United said in a statement.

The move is subject to Leon securing registration.

Manchester United’s transfer window might have already got off to a good start with Matheus Cunha, but it’s set to receive another boost as well.

The club is locked in talks for Bryan Mbeumo with Brentford, and while there is optimism around that deal, it doesn’t look like it will progress quickly.

Diego Leon was signed by Manchester United in the winter transfer window from Cerro Porteno in Paraguay, where he emerged as one of world football’s most exciting youngsters.

Ineos went above and beyond to sign Leon, which was a huge marker of the club’s trust in his abilities.

Diego Leon impressed for Cerro Porteno at just 17, and he will have a chance to gatecrash Ruben Amorim’s plans for next season with a strong pre-season.

It was earlier reported that Leon will arrive in the second week of June, but after delays, V Sports Team, a Paraguayan outlet, reports that he’ll officially arrive on July 1.

While it is a tall order for a teenager joining from Paraguay to make an instant impact at Man Utd, Leon is no ordinary wonderkid.

His pedigree includes playing for Cerro Porteno in the South American version of the Champions League, Copa Libertadores, and he has plenty of experience with Paraguay’s youth teams as well.

Leon has been compared to Marcelo for his fearless and physical play from the wing-back position, which is the ideal profile of a player for Ruben Amorim’s system.

Patrick Dorgu was signed in January as the first-team option, but he’s quite raw as well, and combined with Harry Amass’ breakout, Amorim might have a good collection of options at a position that requires a player to always be at 100%.

A lot will depend on the pre-season because if Amorim wants a small squad, it could be a straight shootout between Amass and Leon for the spot behind Dorgu.

The Paraguayan dynamo can’t be counted out of that fight, and he’ll be itching to make an impact after waiting almost six months to join.

Diogo Jota funeral: Liverpool players, family pay respects

Family, friends and teammates, past and present, gathered to pay their respects to Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, whose funerals were held in Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday morning.
Jota, who was 28, and André, who was 25, were killed in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, in the early hours of Thursday.

Current and former Liverpool teammates, including club captain Virgil Van Dijk and manager Arne Slot, carried two red floral tributes into the chapel, each in the shape of a shirt.

The one carried by Van Dijk had the No. 20 written in white flowers, which Jota wore on his Liverpool shirt. The other bore the No. 30, which was worn by Jota's brother, who played for FC Peñafiel in Portugal's second division.

Dressed in black and with their heads bowed, the teammates entered the church in silence. The only sound was the applause from the crowd outside.

Rute Cardoso, who married her childhood sweetheart Jota only weeks before the fatal crash, arrived with relatives.

Portugal teammates Bruno Fernandes, João Cancelo, Renato Veiga, João Félix, José Fonte, Danilo, Adrien Silva were also present.

Bernardo Silva was seen carrying flowers as he entered the church. The Liverpool team delegation also arrived.

Hundreds of residents of Gondomar, a small town in northern Portugal where Jota grew up, gathered outside.

The private service for family and close friends was presided over by the Bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda.

In an emotional homily addressed to Jota's parents, his wife and their three young children, Linda said "solidarity in love is always stronger than death."

Penafiel players carried André's coffin into the church. Rúben Neves helped to carry Jota's coffin. Jota's wife was consoled by family as she followed the coffins.

"I can't even imagine the pain of the family, of Rute, of the children, of the parents," Silva told TVI before the funeral, in quotes reported by Record. "I must talk a little about Jota, who was a great friend to all of us.

"His career, although not the most important thing, speaks for itself. His passion, will and determination allowed him to succeed in life and have a brilliant career. More important than that, as a person ... the memories that remain ... Jota will remain in our hearts forever. He will always be present at all breakfasts, lunches, dinners, national team gatherings, PlayStation or card games.

"It's a very tough episode for all of us, because we spent a lot of time together. The memories I have with him are fantastic. These happy memories will remain; he will be present in every victory. I'm sure we will remember him with great joy every day. ... [It is] a very sad moment for all of us. The No. 20 was already special, and now it will be even more so.

"We were rivals and teammates for many years. He became a great friend; he was present at my wedding. Unfortunately, I wasn't at his, because I was at the Club World Cup. It's a family that will always be with us and that we will try to preserve."

Jota and Rute had married in Porto on June 22 after knowing each other since they were children.

Manuel Linda shared a special message for Jota's three young children, who did not attend the service.

He said: "Dear Dinis, Mafalda and Duarte, children who are not here. At this moment you suffer immensely or maybe not because you don't realize it. I will pray a lot for you. The ones who suffer the most are your mother and grandparents.

"Seeing the remains of a child must be a great torment, but when there are two urns there are no words. But there are feelings. We are here to say that we also suffered a lot."

Tributes to Jota and his brother have poured in, while thousands of fans have made their way to Anfield stadium to pay their respects to the Liverpool forward.

Jota made 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining from Wolverhampton Wonderers in 2020. He lifted the Premier League title in May, having previously won the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups in his five years at the club.

He earned 49 caps for Portugal and recently won the UEFA Nations League, having previously done so in 2019.
